Titanic Being Eaten by Destructive Bacteria

A new bacterium isolated from the Titanic wreck is accelerating the wreck's disintegration into a pile of dust.

A rust stain may be all that will remain of the RMS Titanic in 15 to 20 years, according to new research into the submerged ocean liner wreck.

Working at a depth of over two miles, a never-before-seen bacterial species is devouring the hull of the so-called "unsinkable ship" on the Atlantic seabed where it sank on April 15, 1912, killing 1,517 people.

[Never before seen outside a lab, maybe. Does anyone really believe this horse shit implication that this is some spontaneous organism that suddenly decided to eat iron?]

Named Halomonas titanicae, the bacterium was isolated from samples of so-called rusticles present on the wreck.

These dark orange structures look like icicles but are made up of rust.

"The isolate was obtained from rusticle samples collected during the Akademic Keldysh expedition in 1991, at the site of the wreck," Canadian and Spanish researchers write in the latest issue of the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology published on Dec. 8.

Removed from the hull using the articulated arm of the Mir 2 robotic submersible, the rusticles were transferred to plastic collection bags and transported aseptically to the surface to be analyzed.

Using DNA technology, the researchers discovered that the rusticles were formed by a combination of 27 different strains of bacteria.

Among the bacteria feasting on the Titanic, there was a brand new member of the salt-loving Halomonas genus.

"We don't know yet whether Halomonas titanicae arrived aboard the RMS Titanic before or after it sank," said lead researcher Henrietta Mann, at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada.

Able to adhere to steel surfaces, the new species has led to the formation of knob-like mounds of corrosion. Covered with such rust mounds, the wreck of the Titanic is at risk of disintegrating into dust, as the porous rusticles eventually dissolve into fine powder.

Discovered in 1985, about two miles below the ocean surface and some 329 miles southeast of Newfoundland, Canada, the wreck of the Titanic has been progressively deteriorating.

Originally made up of 50,000 tons of iron, the ship has dramatically split apart: the stern and the bow lie some 2,000 feet apart in opposite directions.

While potentially dangerous to underwater metal structures like shipwrecks, as well as offshore oil and gas pipelines, the newly discovered species could also offer positive applications for industry.

"The new specie of bacteria plays a significant part in the recycling of iron structures in deep ocean. It could be useful in the disposal old naval and merchant ships and oil rigs," Mann told Discovery News.

According to Bhavleen Kaur, science educator at the Ontario Science Centre, Toronto, Canada, finding a new species is important, but even more exciting is the environment found in the rusticles.

"Out of the consortium of microbes, whose actions are responsible for the formation of rusticles on the Titanic wreck, Halomonas titanicae is the first to be fully characterized and named. How many more novel species are living within the rusticles? How did they get there or did they evolve within this artificially created mini-ecosystem?...These microbes can be an addition to the tool kit when we carry further investigations into corrosive processes," Kaur told Discovery News.

Microbes ate BP oil deep-water plume: study

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Manhattan-sized plume of oil spewed deep into the Gulf of Mexico by BP's broken Macondo well has been consumed by a newly discovered fast-eating species of microbes, scientists reported on Tuesday.

The micro-organisms were apparently stimulated by the massive oil spill that began in April, and they degraded the hydrocarbons so efficiently that the plume is now undetectable, said Terry Hazen of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
These so-called proteobacteria -- Hazen calls them "bugs" -- have adapted to the cold deep water where the big BP plume was observed and are able to biodegrade hydrocarbons much more quickly than expected, without significantly depleting oxygen as most known oil-depleting bacteria do.
Oxygen is essential to the survival of commercially important fish and shellfish; a seasonal low-oxygen "dead zone" forms most summers in the Gulf of Mexico, caused by farm chemical run-off that flows down the Mississippi River.
Hydrocarbons in the crude oil from the BP spill actually stimulated the new microbes' ability to degrade them in cold water, Hazen and his colleagues wrote in research published on Tuesday in the journal Science.
In part, Hazen said, this is because these new "bugs" have adjusted over millions of years to seek out any petroleum they can find at the depths where they live, which coincides with the depth of the previously observed plume, roughly 3000 feet. At that depth, water temperature is approximately 41 degrees F (5 degrees C).
FEASTING ON HYDROCARBONS
Long before humans drilled for oil, natural oil seeps in the Gulf of Mexico have put out the equivalent of an Exxon Valdez spill each year, Hazen said.
Another factor was the consistency of the oil that came from the Macondo wellhead: light sweet Louisiana crude, an easily digestible substance for bacteria, and it was dispersed into tiny droplets, which also makes it more biodegradable.
These latest findings may initially seem to be at odds with a study published last Thursday in Science by researchers from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, which confirmed the existence of the oil plume and said micro-organisms did not seem to be biodegrading it very quickly.
However, Hazen and Rich Camilli of Woods Hole both said on Tuesday that the studies complement each other.
The Woods Hole team used an autonomous robot submarine and a mass spectrometer to detect the plume, but were forced to leave the area in late June, when Hurricane Alex threatened. At that time, they figured the plume was likely to remain for some time.
But that was before the well was capped in mid-July. Hazen said that within two weeks of the capping, the plume could not be detected, but there was a phenomenon called marine snow that indicated microbes had been feasting on hydrocarbons.
As of Tuesday, there was no sign of the plume, Hazen said.
That doesn't mean there is no oil left from the 4.9 million barrels of crude that spilled into the Gulf after the April 20 blowout at BP's Deepwater Horizon rig. The U.S. government estimated on August 4 that 50 percent of the BP oil is gone from the Gulf and the rest is rapidly degrading.

Caption: In a paper appearing in the 18 May issue of Science magazine, M�kinen et al. claim to have measured the total amount of water ice present in a comet. As Comet LINEAR was on what may have been its maiden voyage through the inner parts of our solar system, the nucleus was blown to pieces and all of its water ice evaporated due to the heat from the Sun.

As water evaporates from a comet, it is split into its components of oxygen and hydrogen by radiation from the Sun. The hydrogen atoms "glow" in yet more radiation originating from our star, and this glow can be observed by the SWAN instrument on board SOHO.

Primarily designed to study the interaction of the solar wind with the interstellar breeze of hydrogen, the instrument dubbed Solar Wind Anisotropies scans the sky is also a unique observer of comets. Similar observations are impossible from the ground, due to the absorption in the atmosphere, glare from the Sun during daytime, and a hydrogen cloud surrounding the Earth itself.

The total amount of water vapour observed by SWAN from 25 May to 12 August 2000 is estimated at 3.3 million tonnes. Only about 1% of this was left on 6 August, when one observation by the Hubble Space Telescope of the dying comet's fragments gave an estimate of the total volume of the fragments. Combining the two numbers give a remarkably low value for the density - about 15 kilograms per cubic meters, compared with 917 kg/m³ for familiar non-porous ice. Even allowing for an equal amount of dust grains, 30 kg/m³ is far less than the 500 kg/m³ often assumed by comet scientists. For this reason, the estimated water ice content is expected to raise some controversy. Assuming a homogenous composition of the whole comet, the nucleus had a diameter of about 750 metres at the beginning of SWAN's observation series.

The passage in bold italic above illustrates just one of the giant red flags waving at astronogers. Their model, combined with observations, suggest that this comet had a density of 15kg/m³. Clearly this is idiotic, it's more than an order of magnitude different from expectations, more than an order of magnitude from the assumptions, and yet it is treated as gospel. Now astronogers will be scrambling to explain all these "puffball" comets. Clearly the "dirty snow" model is wrong. Comets flare electrically, they are rocks, not "ices" and "volatiles".

The Provocateur State:

The requirement of an ever-escalating level of social violence to meet the political and economic needs of the insatiable "anti-terrorist complex" is the essence of the new US militarism.

What is now openly billed as "permanent war" ultimately serves the geo-political ends of social control in the interests of US corporate domination, much as the anti-communist crusade of the now-exhausted Cold War did.

Back in 2002, following the trauma of 9-11, Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld predicted there would be more terrorist attacks against the American people and civilization at large. How could he be so sure of that? Perhaps because these attacks would be instigated on the order of the Honorable Mr. Rumsfeld. According to Los Angeles Times military analyst William Arkin, writing Oct. 27, 2002, Rumsfeld set out to create a secret army, "a super-Intelligence Support Activity" network that would "bring together CIA and military covert action, information warfare, intelligence, and cover and deception," to stir the pot of spiraling global violence.

According to a classified document prepared for Rumsfeld by his Defense Science Board, the new organization--the "Proactive, Preemptive Operations Group (P2OG)"--would actually carry out secret missions designed to provoke terrorist groups into committing violent acts. The P2OG, a 100-member, so-called "counter-terrorist" organization with a $100-million-a-year budget, would ostensibly target "terrorist leaders," but according to P2OG documents procured by Arkin, would in fact carry out missions designed to "stimulate reactions" among "terrorist groups"--which, according to the Defense Secretary's logic, would subsequently expose them to "counter-attack" by the good guys. In other words, the plan is to execute secret military operations (assassinations, sabotage, "deception") which would intentionally result in terrorist attacks on innocent people, including Americans--essentially, to "combat terrorism" by causing it!

This notion is currently being applied to the problem of the Iraqi "insurgency," it seems. According to a May 1, 2005 report by Peter Maass in the New York Times Magazine, two of the top US advisers to Iraqi paramilitary commandos fighting the insurgents are veterans of US counterinsurgency operations in Latin America. Loaning credence to recent media speculation about the "Salvadorization" of Iraq, the report notes that one adviser currently in Iraq is James Steele, who led a team of 55 US Army Special Forces advisers in El Salvador in the 1980s. Maass writes that these advisors "trained front-line battalions that were accused of significant human rights abuses."

The current senior US adviser at the Iraqi Interior Ministry, which Maass writes "has operational control over the commandos," is former top US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) official Steve Casteel, who worked "alongside local forces" in the US-sponsored "Drug War" in Bolivia, Peru and Colombia, "where he was involved in the hunt for Pablo Escobar, the head of the Medellin cocaine cartel."

The US "drug war" in Latin America also serves as a cover for ongoing counterinsurgency, employing terrorist methods to achieve two aims: one, actually combating genuine insurgency; two, the ratcheting up of a "strategy of tension," heightened social violence designed to induce fear among the citizenry and the subsequent call for greater "security."

This was the essence, for example, of Operation Gladio, a decades-long covert campaign of provocateur-style terrorism and deceit. The ostensible purpose of Gladio, officially launched as a covert NATO program in 1952, was to establish a clandestine network of "stay-behind" teams which would organize armed resistance and sabotage in the event of a Soviet invasion of Western Europe. But the network actually took a far more proactive role. Directed by US/NATO intelligence services of the West against their own populations, Operation Gladio led to possibly hundreds of innocent people being killed or maimed in "terrorist" attacks which were then blamed on "leftist subversives" or other political opponents. The most notorious such attack was the 1980 bombing of the train station at Bologna, which left 85 dead. Initially blamed on left-wing radicals, the blast was revealed upon investigation to be the work of an ultra-right network linked to the Italy's Gladio team; four Italian neo-fascists were eventually convicted of the crime.

The purpose was again twofold: to demonize designated enemies (the "communists") and to frighten the public into supporting ever-increasing powers for the national security state. It appears the Pentagon has been implementing Gladio-style operations for quite some time--possibly including 9-11. A stretch? Maybe not.

Witness the US Joint Chiefs discussion of "Operation Northwoods" back in 1962, a plan to blow up U.S. "assets"--including U.S. citizens--in order to justify an invasion of Cuba. Later, US Army Field Manual 30-31B, entitled "Stability Operations Intelligence - Special Fields," dated March 18, 1970 and signed by Gen. William C Westmoreland, promoted terrorist attacks (and the planting of false evidence) in public places which were then to be blamed on "communists" and "socialists." It called for the execution of terrorist attacks throughout Western Europe, carried out through a network of covert US/NATO armies, in order to convince European governments of "the communist threat."

What is striking is that during this period the primary source for US government info on the Russian "threat" was coming from the Gehlen Organization, Hitlers eastern front intelligence apparatus, which in the aftermath of World War II had cut a deal with the CIA's Allen Dulles and worked out of Fort Hunt, just outside Washington DC, before being relocated back to Munich. Headed up by super-spy Nazi General Reinhard Gehlen, the Org's "special operations" expertise was heeded, financed and well-protected by U.S. tax dollars well into the 1970's. Could the Gehlen Org have had an influence in the production of FM 30-31B?

According to FM 30-31B,

"there may be times when Host Country Governments show passivity or indecision in the face of communist subversion and according to the interpretation of the US secret services do not react with sufficient effectiveness. Most often such situations come about when the revolutionaries temporarily renounce the use of force and thus hope to gain an advantage, as the leaders of the host country wrongly consider the situation to be secure. US army intelligence must have the means of launching special operations which will convince Host Country Governments and public opinion of the reality of the insurgent danger."

The U.S. Army now claims the document was a Russian forgery. Journalist Allan Francovich in his BBC documentation on Gladio and US/NATO "special operations" terrorism, asked Ray Cline, CIA deputy director from 1962 to 1966, if he believed FM 30-31B was for real and he replied: "Well, I suspect it is an authentic document. I don't doubt it. I never saw it but it's the kind of special forces military operations that are described," to be implemented at the discretion of the president and Defense Department on the "appropriate occasion."

It could be that in Iraq--and elsewhere around the world--the "appropriate occasion" has arrived. Bush's war on terrorism could be the ultimate manifestation of the provocateur state; carrying out of clandestine "executive actions" and "special operations" directed against populations, including our own, who are truly ignorant of the real "enemy" in the face of the ever-present manufactured one, traumatized by strategic terror designed to engender fear and acquiescence to further "security measures"--thereby enriching the military, police agencies, and munitions and nuclear business enterprises.

“A few days ago, an American manned check point confiscated the driver license of a driver and told him to report to an American military camp near Baghdad airport for interrogation and in order
to retrieve his license. The next day, the driver did visit the camp and he was allowed in the camp with his car. He was admitted to a room for an interrogation that lasted half an hour. At the end of the session, the
American interrogator told him: ‘OK, there is nothing against you, but you do know that Iraq is now sovereign and is in charge of its own affairs. Hence, we have forwarded your papers and license to al-Kadhimia police
station for processing. Therefore, go there with this clearance to reclaim your license. At the police station, ask for Lt. Hussain Mohammed who is waiting for you now. Go there now quickly, before he leaves his shift
work”.

The driver did leave in a hurry, but was soon alarmed with a feeling that his car was driving as if carrying a heavy load, and he also became suspicious of a low flying helicopter that kept hovering
overhead, as if trailing him. He stopped the car and inspected it carefully. He found nearly 100 kilograms of explosives hidden in the back seat and along the two back doors.

The only feasible explanation for this
incidence is that the car was indeed booby trapped by the Americans and intended for the al-Khadimiya Shiite district of Baghdad. The helicopter was monitoring his movement and witnessing the anticipated “hideous
attack by foreign elements”.

The same scenario was repeated in Mosul, in the north of Iraq. A car was confiscated along with the driver’s license. He did follow up on the matter and finally reclaimed his car
but was told to go to a police station to reclaim his license. Fortunately for him, the car broke down on the way to the police station. The inspecting car mechanic discovered that the spare tire was fully laden with
explosives."

A perhaps unrelated incident, but the circumstances are strangely similar.

Canadian killed in Iraq was Toronto-area trucker April 28, 2005:

"A Canadian man who was killed in Iraq last week – possibly by U.S. troops – lived near Toronto for
years and also held Iraqi citizenship, the CBC has learned.

Some media cited unidentified sources who said he may have died after U.S. forces "tracked" a target, using a helicopter gunship, but Foreign Affairs said it's still investigating
conflicting reports of the death.

U.S. officials have denied any involvement.

Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs will only say assigning blame is premature. It's still trying to get a complete picture of what happened from authorities in Baghdad."

SIX WAYS TO FAKE A SUICIDE BOMBING

If major operations like 9/11 are the pillars of deception, minor operations like suicide bombings are its walls. Without doubt, suicide bombings are the staple of destabilization, serving to generate sectarian strife. They also serve to inflame public opinion against Islam and Muslims, apparently a major goal of the group behind the continuing terror operations.

Imagine for a moment that you happen to be nearby when a “suicide bomber” strikes. One moment you are pursuing your daily life, with all its comforting regularities. Perhaps you are approaching a bus stop, where you intend to wait with a gathering crowd. You happen to be wondering what you will have for supper that evening . . .

BANG!

The explosion takes your breath away, the concussion knocks you to your knees. For a few seconds you don’t where you are or even who you are. Your face is wet. Numbly you pass your hand over it, shocked to see it smeared with blood. A deep cut in your forehead, made by a jagged piece of metal, bleeds profusely. Otherwise, you are merely dazed.

You struggle to your feet and walk uncertainly toward the blast scene to see what you can do to help. Everywhere there are people lying or sitting on the ground, some crying, some bleeding, some in shock, some dead. There is blood everywhere. Then you see a section of torso, with intestines slipping out. Ohmigod!

You are too numb to reconstruct the scene, wondering where the bomber came from. You don’t remember. Frankly, you were paying very little attention to your surroundings. Sirens grow louder. You pass out.

Given the realities of such scenes, it becomes rather easy to see how suicide attacks can be staged. Like the magician, the black ops specialist is concerned only with the “effect,” as stage magicians call it. In fact if you read a manual of stage magic, you are only one step removed from black operations. There you will read that the effect is the ultimate goal:

effect: an elephant disappears into thin air

For each trick in the manual, the effect is described first, then “preparation” and “execution” of the trick. Stage magic works because of certain predictable mental habits of humans under the circumstances that have been arranged.

effect: a Muslim suicide bomber attacks a crowded bus stop

Under the particular circumstances of the event just described, it might only be necessary to follow one of the methods outlined below, with no attempt to demonstrate that the bomber was a Muslim. In a middle Eastern country it would not be necessary to stuff the pockets of the bomber with religious tracts. In a western country, this would definitely be necessary.

Here is a list of methods for staging a suicide attack. They are all perfectly feasible, given the shock and confusion of any potential witnesses after the event. In fact, in a place like Iraq, there are frequent opportunities to forego tricks of any kind. Since your target audience is mainly the western media, you merely plant the explosion and, at the appropriate time, press the electronic trigger. Then you simply describe the explosion (via your military contacts) as a “suicide bombing.” Since the reporters are all embedded, they will arrive only when the military takes them. They will see the blood and body parts of course, they will take a few photos, perhaps even talk to one or two selected witnesses. They will then return to the base by jeep or APC with yet another suicide bomber story in the can.

1. Give a young person an “important package” to deliver, along with a large amount of cash as a delivery fee. When the person has arrived at the delivery point, press the electronic trigger that sets off the explosives in the package.

2. Prepare a car or truck with explosives, place a cadaver next to the explosives, drive the vehicle to the place where the explosion is to occur, leave the vehicle, walk to a safe distance, then press the electronic trigger.

3. Strap explosives to a cadaver, place it in a large cardboard box or other screening contrivance, drive it to the planned explosion point, unload the item as though making a delivery and let it sit there until most people have forgotten about it, then press the electronic trigger.

4. Strap explosives to a person who is so heavily drugged that he/she has no idea what you are doing and can barely stand up. Drive the person to a crowded venue, let him/her out of the vehicle, then drive quickly off and press the electronic trigger.

5. Locate a clinically depressed (suicidal) person who has no particular commitment to Islam, but who hates the target group. Then facilitate the bombing by adding the right drug, if necessary. The operation then proceeds as above, but with the full cooperation of the bomber. Simply press the electronic trigger.

It took relatively little time to come up with these methods. Here’s yet another method, just in:

6. Haul someone over for a licence or other traffic violation and impound their vehicle while they pursue legal paperwork. Plant explosives under the back seat. When the owner of the vehicle returns to claim his car, direct him to a particular police station for final clearance. The charge is detonated as the driver passes the target area. We have good information that this last method, basically a combination of methods 1 and 2, is in actual use.

The CIA has spent a great deal of its time-- and your money--developing countless bizarre weapons for assassination, sabotage, and mass destruction. If that's news to you, it's because the CIA doesn't want these products, some of which are quite easy to put together, to fall into the "wrong hands." As for whether they are in the right hands now--judge for yourself.

The CIA has developed many exotic and sophisticated devices intended for use in interrogation, sabotage, and assassination. These weapons are necessary--if you grant that what the CIA itself does is necessary. If the CIA wants to eliminate a key KGB agent operating in Hungary, it faces certain problems. It would be virtually impossible to slip a deadly weapon, such as a gun or bomb, past Hungarian customs officials. Thus, the CIA assassin must assemble his weapon from commonly obtainable materials after he crosses the border.

The CIA agent might decide to construct a urea nitrate explosive, commonly known as a urine bomb. This weapon is quite deadly, easily exploded, and consists primarily of nitric acid and urine. The urine bomb is one of literally hundreds of murderous weapons in the CIA arsenal.

The New York Times of September 26, 1975 revealed the existence of guns that shoot cobra-venom darts. Then there was the shoe polish compound intended to make Fidel Castro's beard fall out, so that he would lose his "charisma." And CIA laboratories in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey developed the famous rifle that shoots around corners.

Some CIA weapons are designed to kill many people--deadly germs can be released in subways; others are intended to kill a single, specific individual--the Borgia ring contains deadly poison to be slipped into a victim's drink; and still others are standard weapons supplied for such missions as overthrowing the Allende government in Chile in 1973.

The information about CIA weapons that you will read in this article generally has not been made public before. It was not intended to be. But your tax dollars pay for these devices; it is your right to know about them.

There is a booklet, written in 1977 and distributed to a select group of U.S. mercenaries, titled CIA Improvised Sabotage Devices. This instructional guidebook, part of the Combat Bookshelf, was published by Desert Publications, P.O. Box 22005, Phoenix, Arizona 85028. If you want to know how the CIA turns a cigar box into an explosive that can destroy a 10,000-gallon capacity storage tank, then "CIA Improvised Sabotage Devices" is what you should read. You will need it if you want to build the "Water-Drip Electric Delay," a bomb that requires little more than wood scrap, a tin can, and a battery. The "Pocket Watch Electric Delay" requires little more than a watch, a screw, and a battery. The "Mousetrap Electric Release" is another bomb, this one requiring a mousetrap, a trip wire, a battery, and little else. It is described as "an excellent device to use with bazooka rockets against trucks, tanks, or locomotives." The "Chemical Instantaneous Initiator" is made from a sugar-chlorate mix and is effective in sabotaging trains. The "Martini Glass Shaped Charge" is a bomb that also can be made out of a beer can. You might want to try to construct the "Vehicle Booby Trap." The "Potassium Chlorate and Sugar Igniter" and the "Sawdust, Moth Flakes, and Oil Incendiary" can be made with only what you see in their titles.

For these and more than fifty other CIA devices, step-by-step instructions on how to make them and illustrations of what they should look like when completed are given. Turn a wine bottle into a bomb. Build a land-mine rocket. Manufacture napalm in your basement. Even the simple how-tos of causing a dust explosion can be found in CIA Improvised Sabotage Devices.

Why is the CIA so deeply involved in sabotage techniques? The CIA might think it is in this country's interest to delay scientific work being done by another nation. Or, the CIA might want to disrupt a nation's economy in the hope that the resulting chaos will lead to civil unrest and the overthrow of the existing government (some of this actually happened in Chile). The original John Rockefeller used such tactics against his competitors. He simply had their refineries blown up.

Another pamphlet the CIA would not like you to see is titled How to Kill, written by John Minnery, edited by Robert Brown and Peder Lund, and published by Paladin Press, Box 1307, Boulder, Colorado 80306. The reason the CIA would prefer that you not see this eighty-eight-page pamphlet, which is unavailable at bookstores and newsstands, is because it contains a number of "ingenious" methods of doing what the title says. Also, Paladin Press, which published a book called OSS Sabotage and Demolition Manual, is widely regarded by journalists as an organization with close ties to mercenary groups and the CIA. Paladin Press doesn't want you to know that, but how else could they have published the OSS Sabotage and Demolition Manual? The Office of Strategic Services was the precursor of today's CIA.

This writer's call to Colorado yielded the following conversation:

"How could you publish the OSS Sabotage and Demolition Manual, I asked Peter Lund, editor and publisher of Paladin Press, "if your organization, at the least, was not dealing with former OSS agents? And what about How to Kill?
"I don't talk to journalists," Lund said.
"You're called the Paladin Press. You must publish books. Can I order them?"
"No."
"Why not? You're a publisher, aren't you?"
"We're afraid our publications might fall into the wrong hands."
"What are the right hands?" I asked.
"I don't talk to journalists."
"Have you ever heard of Desert Publications?" I asked.
"A fine outfit," Lund said. "If they recommend you, I'll send you our material."
"That's my problem," I said. "They don't seem to have a phone number."
"Well, they're a good group."
"Listen," I said, "wasn't your group, and Desert Publications besides, involved in CIA mercenary activity in Africa?"
"I don't know anything about that."
"Were you in the Special Forces?"
"July 1967 to July 1968 in Vietnam."
"Were you CIA?"
"I was MACV [Military Armed Forces Command Vietnam]."
"You weren't affiliated with CIA?"
"I didn't say that."
"What do you say?"
"We did joint operations with CIA on the Phoenix Program."
"Wasn't that a murder operation?"
"No. It was snatching people."

The Phoenix Program was designed for a job that the CIA euphemistically described as "eliminating the Viet Cong infrastructure." In reality, it was a rampant reign of terror run out of CIA headquarters at Langley, Virginia. Former CIA director William Colby later termed the program "effective." The Phoenix Program was a naked murder campaign, as proved by every realistic report, ranging from the Bertrand Russell Tribunal to the Dellums Committee to admissions by CIA agents themselves. The program killed--and none of these killings occurred in combat--18,000 people, mostly women and children.

But what about Peder Lund, editor and publisher of Paladin Press? The book he edited and published, How to Kill, outlined a surfeit of murder methods, horrific techniques of causing people to die. For example:

"Without getting too deeply into the realm of the bizarre," wrote John Minnery, the author of How to Kill as he proceeded to just that, "a specially loaded bullet made from a human tooth (bicuspid) could be fired under the jaw or through the mouth into the head. The tooth is a very hard bone, and its enamel shell would allow it to penetrate into the brain. The intention here is also to hide the cause of death because the examiner in his search for a projectile will disregard bone fragments."

One last example from How to Kill should give you the flavor of the book:

Lesson Nine: Hot Wire
"Essentially, the weapon is an electrified grid in the urinal basin. This can take the form of a screen cover for the drain or a metal grill. If the urinal is completely porcelain, the screen must be added by the assassin. The drain cover is connected to the electrical system of the washroom by means of an insulated cord that is hidden behind the plumbing.
"What happens when the subject uses the urinal should be obvious now. The subject's urine, which is a salty liquid and a perfect conductor of electricity, makes contact with the charged grid, and the shock will kill him."

This reporter's investigation revealed that the "Hot Wire" was child's play compared to certain other CIA weapons devices. For instance, I was able to obtain Volumes One and Two of the CIA Black Book on improvised munitions, volumes that are stamped "for official use only" on almost every page. It is obvious why the CIA would like these books to remain secret. With elaborate instructions, they describe how to make high explosives from aspirin, how to construct a nail grenade, and how to turn a Coke bottle into a bomb.

Described in detail in the Black Book is the previously mentioned urea nitrate explosive, or, as it is known to the pros, "the piss bomb." Instructions for the preparation of this weapon assure the maker that animal urine will do as well as human; the important thing is to have ten cups of it, boil it down to one cup, and mix it with the nitric acid.

Also described in the Black Book is how to construct a pipe pistol, which, as the name indicates, is a gun constructed out of a pipe. Other weapons include a cooking syringe filled with poison that can be stabbed into "the subject's" stomach; a cyanide gas pistol; a throat cutter gauntlet knife (razor sharp and only an inch or so in length); and a mixture of fertilizer and aluminum powder that can be made into a powerful bomb.

Why build murder weapons out of such weird material? Is the CIA insane?

No. In its own way, the whole thing is perfectly logical.

The pamphlet How to Kill explained it all: "As most of these devices are homemade, this precludes the possibility of their being traced. They are, in effect, `sanitized' and perfect for assassinations, where weapons are prohibited, or where customs in the hostile country are stringent, so these can be made from local materials."

Being a contract killer for the CIA is not all roses. You cannot kill in just any way. A number of attempts have been made on Fidel Castro's life--some with the CIA and the Mafia cooperating--and some of them may have failed because of restrictions imposed on the potential assassins. It would be unacceptable for Castro's murder to be laid at the door of the CIA. This would make Castro a martyr in the eyes of his countrymen. Thus, a method that would suggest death by natural causes must be found.

Abundant speculation and considerable evidence suggest that the CIA or some other government agency arranged for the "natural" deaths of David Ferrie, Jack Ruby, George De Mohrenschildt, and other potential witnesses into the assassination of John Kennedy. Some methods of killing, like the injection of an air bubble into the bloodstream, will often go unnoticed by medical examiners.

Another hard-to-trace method of killing is to mail a snake to the victim. This is known as killing by long distance. A disadvantage to this method is that the snake might bite an innocent third party who just happens to open the package. The advantage is that once the snake has struck, the evidence can simply slither away.

Sometimes, as the CIA knows, killing has to be done at close range. For this purpose, a valuable weapon is the ice pick with a blood arrester attached. The blood arrester is a cloth wrapped near the tip of the ice pick. When the pick is shoved into the victim, the spurting blood is absorbed by the blood arrester. People who see the victim fall will probably think he has had a heart attack. While the onlookers try to help the victim, the assassin uses this valuable ten or fifteen seconds to escape unnoticed.

Often it is advisable to use what is called in the trade a "quiet weapon." Silenced weapons can include pistols, rifles, and even machine guns.

Poison is a quiet killer. Here is a partial list of the poisons the CIA has become expert at administering: oil of bitter almonds; ant paste; cadmium, used in vapor form, and death is delayed four hours; radiator cleaner, also causing a delayed death; Cantharides (Spanish Fly); ethyl mercury; and freon, heated by a flame. These poisons and many others are listed in How to Kill. The author then cautions the reader:

"Unless otherwise stated, these poisons are either to be injected into the subject, or taken orally by him by adding it to his food. Use common sense in the application of these potions and, if possible, double the O.D. necessary."

W.H. Bowart, in his book, Operation Mind Control described the CIA's use of drugs: "In 1953, the CIA made plans to purchase ten kilograms of LSD for use in `drug experiments with animals and human beings.' Since there are more than 10,000 doses in a gram, that meant the CIA wanted 100 million doses. The CIA obviously intended to `corner the market' on LSD so that other countries would not be ahead of the U.S. in their potential for `LSD warfare.'"

Dr. Albert Hoffman, an early researcher into the uses of LSD, was horrified by what the CIA was doing: "I had perfected LSD for medical use, not as a weapon. It can make you insane or even kill you if it is not properly used under medical supervision. In any case, the research should be done by medical people and not by soldiers or intelligence agencies."

Perhaps the most frightening weapon of all is the one that can be used to alter weather and climate. It was used with considerable success in Vietnam. It slowed troop movements with heavy rains, and it destroyed the rice crop, as well. The danger is that these climatological changes may become permanent, affecting not only enemies of the United States, but also the entire planet.

Finally, considerable evidence exists that the United States, through the CIA, employed germ warfare during the Korean War. A number of captured pilots testified that germ warfare was used, but their testimony was dismissed as brainwashing. A Marine Corps colonel named Frank H. Schwable signed a germ warfare confession and, according to W.H. Bowart, "named names, cited missions, described meetings and strategy conferences."

Schwable later repudiated his confession. But the charges of germ warfare were taken up in front of the United Nations, and a number of countries believed them.

The United States, incidentally, was later charged with using nerve gas in Vietnam.

What you have read on these pages is pretty revolting stuff. Yet, if the world ought to be saved from Communism, who can say it is not necessary? One danger, of course, is that these terrible weapons have been introduced into our body politic and have produced strange and terrible fruits on our own native soil. When assassination becomes government policy, when men are trained to kill in every conceivable way, when morality is set aside for a "higher good," can even the President of the United States consider himself safe?

For years, people have been laughing at the horrific economic decline of Detroit. Well, guess what? The same thing that happened to Detroit is now happening to dozens of other communities across the United States. From coast to coast there are formerly great manufacturing cities that have turned into rotting, post-industrial war zones. In particular, in America's "rust belt" you can drive through town after town after town that resemble little more than post-apocalyptic wastelands. In many U.S. cities, the "real" rate of unemployment is over 30 percent. There are some communities that will start depressing you almost the moment you drive into them. It is almost as if all of the hope has been sucked right out of those communities.

Meanwhile, the economic downturn has been incredibly hard on the finances of state and local governments across the United States. Unlike the federal government, state and local governments cannot use the Federal Reserve to play games with their exploding debt burdens. Facing horrific budget deficits, many communities have begun adopting "austerity measures" in an attempt to slow the flow of red ink. All over the nation, deep budget cuts are slashing police departments, fire departments and other basic social services, but it seems like no matter what many of these communities try the debt just keeps growing.

So when you combine economic hopelessness with drastic budget cuts, what you get are hordes of communities from coast to coast that are becoming just like Detroit. In the city of Detroit today, there are over 33,000 abandoned houses, 44 schools have been permanently closed down, the mayor wants to bulldoze one-fourth of the city and you can literally buy a house for one dollar in the worst areas. Many Americans thought that it was funny to make fun of Detroit, but little did they know that what happened there would soon start happening everywhere.

The following are 24 signs that all of America is becoming a rotting, post-industrial, post-apocalyptic wasteland just like Detroit....

#1 The second most dangerous city in the United States - Camden, New Jersey - is about to lay off about half its police.

#2 In the city of Camden, about the only "industries" that are truly thriving are drug-dealing and prostitution. It is estimated that there are literally dozens of open-air drug markets in Camden.

#3 The city of Newark, New Jersey laid off 13 percent of its police force just last week.

#4 Of 315 municipalities the New Jersey State Policemen's union recently surveyed, more than half indicated that they were planning to lay off police officers.

#5 At least 1000 people now live in the 200 miles of flood tunnels that exist under the city of Las Vegas.

#6 All over America, asphalt roads are being ground up and are being replaced with gravel because it is cheaper to maintain. The state of South Dakota has transformed over 100 miles of asphalt road into gravel over the past year, and 38 out of the 83 counties in the state of Michigan have transformed at least some of their asphalt roads into gravel roads.

#7 The number of Americans on food stamps has hit yet another new all-time record. 42.9 million Americans are now enrolled and federal authorities fully expect that number to continue to skyrocket.

#8 The city of San Jose, California recently laid off 49 firefighters.

#9 Over the past year, approximately 100 of New York's state parks and historic sites have had to cut services and reduce hours.

#10 In 2009 alone, approximately 4 million more Americans joined the ranks of the poor.

#11 The state of Arizona recently decided to stop paying for many types of organ transplants for people enrolled in its Medicaid program.

#12 Many of the police in Arizona that patrol communities near the border with Mexico say that they are "outmanned" and "outgunned" and now live in fear of being taken out by drug cartel assassins.

#13 Gang violence in America is getting totally out of control. According to authorities, there are now over 1 million members of criminal gangs operating inside the country, and those gangs are responsible for up to 80% of the violent crimes committed in the U.S. each year.

#14 Oakland, California Police Chief Anthony Batts has announced that due to severe budget cuts there are a number of crimes that his department will simply not be able to respond to any longer. The crimes that the Oakland police will no longer be responding to include grand theft, burglary, car wrecks, identity theft and vandalism.

#15 One out of every six Americans is now enrolled in at least one anti-poverty program run by the federal government.

#16 The state of Illinois is so far behind on its bills that not even schools and essential social services are getting their money on time.

So if you live in one of those cities and you have a fire, you had better hope that your local fire station is not scheduled for a "brownout" that day.

As I have documented in article after article, the "American Dream" is rapidly becoming the American Nightmare. We were once a nation that was endlessly expanding, endlessly growing and endlessly becoming more powerful, but now just the opposite is happening.

All of this didn't happen overnight. Back in 1982, Billy Joel could see what was starting to happen and he released a song entitled "Allentown" which captured the depression that many residents of once great steel cities were experiencing. The song started out with these two lines....

Well we're living here in Allentown
And they're closing all the factories down

Well, the United States has lost over 42,000 factories since 2001 and now all of America is turning into "Allentown".

Unfortunately, things are going to get even worse. Thousands more factories and millions more jobs will be sent overseas. The debt loads of our state and local governments will continue to skyrocket. The truth is that city after city after city is going to start looking like something out of a third world country.

But perhaps you disagree. Perhaps you believe that America's greatest days are just around the corner.

Abstract:

We have discovered distinctive red/gray chips in all the samples we have studied of the dust produced by the destruction of the World Trade Center. Examination of four of these samples, collected from separate sites, is reported in this paper. These red/gray chips show marked similarities in all four samples. One sample was collected by a Manhattan resident about ten minutes after the collapse of the second WTC Tower, two the next day, and a fourth about a week later. The properties of these chips were analyzed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (XEDS), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The red material contains grains approximately 100 nm across which are largely iron oxide, while aluminum is contained in tiny plate-like structures. Separation of components using methyl ethyl ketone demonstrated that elemental aluminum is present. The iron oxide and aluminum are intimately mixed in the red material. When ignited in a DSC device the chips exhibit large but narrow exotherms occurring at approximately 430 °C, far below the normal ignition temperature for conventional thermite. Numerous iron-rich spheres are clearly observed in the residue following the ignition of these peculiar red/gray chips. The red portion of these chips is found to be an unreacted thermitic material and highly energetic.

The definition of thermitic material:

A trademark used for a welding and incendiary mixture of fine aluminum powder with a metallic oxide, usually iron, that when ignited yields an intense heat.

Thermite is a pyrotechnic composition of a metal powder and a metal oxide, which produces an aluminothermic reaction known as a thermite reaction. (Wikipedia)

What we are dealing with is the melting/ burning of metal structures.

“Metals are capable of burning under the right conditions, similarly to the combustion process of wood or gasoline. … A thermite reaction is a process in which the correct mixture of metallic fuels are combined and ignited. Ignition itself requires extremely high temperatures.”

Readers can reach their own conclusions as to the far-reaching implications of these findings.

Although the authors do not address the broader issue of the 9/11 attacks, their findings have a direct bearing on the likely causes of the collapse of the WTC buildings on September 11, 2001. The findings also question the validity of the official report of the 911 Commission.

INTRODUCTION

The destruction of three skyscrapers (WTC 1, 2 and 7) on September 11, 2001 was an immensely tragic catastrophe that not only impacted thousands of people and families directly, due to injury and loss of life, but also provided the motivation for numerous expensive and radical changes in domestic and foreign policy. For these and other reasons, knowing what really happened that fateful day is of grave importance.

A great deal of effort has been put forth by various government-sponsored and -funded investigations, which led, in large part, to the reports released by FEMA [1] and NIST [2]. Other studies of the destruction have been less well publicized but are no less important to the outstanding obligation that remains to the victims of that tragedy, to determine the whole truth of the events of that day [3-10]. A number of these studies have appropriately focused attention on the remaining physical material, and on available photographs and video footage, as sources of evidence still in public hands, relating to the method of destruction of the three skyscrapers.

CONCLUSIONS

We have discovered distinctive red/gray chips in significant numbers in dust associated with the World Trade Center destruction. We have applied SEM/XEDS and other methods to characterize the small-scale structure and chemical signature of these chips, especially of their red component. The red material is most interesting and has the following characteristics:

1. It is composed of aluminum, iron, oxygen, silicon and carbon. Lesser amounts of other potentially reactive elements are sometimes present, such as potassium, sulfur, lead, barium and copper.

2. The primary elements (Al, Fe, O, Si, C) are typically all present in particles at the scale of tens to hundreds of nanometers, and detailed XEDS mapping shows intimate mixing.

3. On treatment with methyl ethyl ketone solvent, some segregation of components occurred. Elemental aluminum became sufficiently concentrated to be clearly identified in the pre-ignition material.

4. Iron oxide appears in faceted grains roughly 100 nm across whereas the aluminum appears in thin platelike structures. The small size of the iron oxide particles qualifies the material to be characterized as nanothermite or super-thermite.

5. Analysis shows that iron and oxygen are present in a ratio consistent with Fe2O3. The red material in all four WTC dust samples was similar in this way. Iron oxide was found in the pre-ignition material whereas elemental iron was not.

6. From the presence of elemental aluminum and iron oxide in the red material, we conclude that it contains the ingredients of thermite.

7. As measured using DSC, the material ignites and reacts vigorously at a temperature of approximately 430 °C, with a rather narrow exotherm, matching fairly closely an independent observation on a known super-thermite sample. The low temperature of ignition and the presence of iron oxide grains less than 120 nm show that the material is not conventional thermite (which ignites at temperatures above 900 °C) but very likely a form of super-thermite.

8. After igniting several red/gray chips in a DSC run to 700 °C, we found numerous iron-rich spheres and spheroids in the residue, indicating that a very high temperature reaction had occurred, since the iron-rich product clearly must have been molten to form these shapes. In several spheres, elemental iron was verified since the iron content significantly exceeded the oxygen content. We conclude that a high-temperature reduction-oxidation reaction has occurred in the heated chips, namely, the thermite reaction.

9. The spheroids produced by the DSC tests and by the flame test have an XEDS signature (Al, Fe, O, Si, C) which is depleted in carbon and aluminum relative to the original red material. This chemical signature strikingly matches the chemical signature of the spheroids produced by igniting commercial thermite, and also matches the signatures of many of the microspheres found in the WTC dust [5].

10. The carbon content of the red material indicates that an organic substance is present. This would be expected for super-thermite formulations in order to produce high gas pressures upon ignition and thus make them explosive. The nature of the organic material in these chips merits further exploration. We note that it is likely also an energetic material, in that the total energy release sometimes observed in DSC tests exceeds the theoretical maximum energy of the classic thermite reaction.

Based on these observations, we conclude that the red layer of the red/gray chips we have discovered in the WTC dust is active, unreacted thermitic material, incorporating nanotechnology, and is a highly energetic pyrotechnic or explosive material.

Initially, 200,000 tons of structural steel and large objects were examined individually and shipped for recycling directly from the World Trade Center site. The remaining debris was sent by truck and barge to Staten Island. These debris samples represent the three smallest sizes of material sorted using the Corps-designed process. Historic World Trade Center Artifacts on Display Downtown - DNAinfo.com

LOWER MANHATTAN — A downtown exhibit of artifacts from the World Trade Center site — some of which have buried for over 400 years — opened on Tuesday at the India House in Lower Manhattan.

The anchor on display was discovered only feet from where the keel was found, but years later. It was first unearthed during the building of the World Trade Center in 1967, but it sat in the basement of the Twin Towers until its rediscovery decades later.

The exhibit also includes modern day artifacts including scaled models of the USS New York made from recovered World Trade Center iron.

A Leftist Soldiers on After 9/11 Claims His Father

After two planes exploded into the Twin Towers on September 11th, Jeremy Matthew Glick fielded two different types of calls. Because he shared the name of one of the men who brought down United flight 93 in rural Pennsylvania, rather than allow its terrorist hijackers to hit their next target, frantic loved ones checked in to make sure the Fairlawn, New Jersey native was not the same Glick on flight 93. Next, there were contradicting calls coming in assuring the Glicks that their patriarch Barry was okay, before another would ring to cast doubt on Barry's survival.

For a week the younger Glick searched morgues and scanned Dead on Arrival lists in a quest to find his father. It was finally confirmed that Barry Glick, Risk Manger for the Port Authority of NY/NJ, perished in Tower One when it collapsed because he stayed behind to assist a woman having an asthma attack. As Glick planned to memorialize his father, the man he called his "number one debate partner," he also held on tight to his leftist politics. "I've been a revolutionary for about 12 years," he says. "9-11 didn't set me off." If anything, he says, "It made me more disciplined."

Before the fires at Ground Zero had been fully extinguished, Glick joined a small crew of editors to put together "Another World is Possible: Conversations in a Time of Terror." Published only three months after the attacks, the book presented a wide range of experiences, from a broad range of ethnicities and religions, as a voice against a seemingly monolithic call for violent retribution. Glick has an essay that appears in the book, along with essays from a paramedic, a doctor, a journalist and several others, including some anonymous submissions.

A social justice activist since high school, Glick vehemently disagreed with the eye-for-an-eye mantra chanted by President Bush and a non-dissenting congress post-September 11th. While completing a Master's and working toward a doctorate in English and Africana Studies, Glick balanced his studies with a speaking tour to promote "Another World is Possible" and to talk about why his loss did not shake his leftist beliefs and why he held the U.S. government, dating back to the Carter administration, responsible for his father's murder. Glick also added his signature to the Not in Our Name Statement of Conscience that ran on a full page in The New York Times, twice.

Nearly two years later, still grieving the loss of his dad, 28-year-old Glick continues to speak "literally all over the country" at rallies and lectures. He maintains the same set of principles and sense of urgency against the war on Iraq that he exhibited while speaking against the bombing of Afghanistan. Affiliated with several organizations, he has represented groups like Not in Our Name, of which he is a board member, and September 11th Families for a Peaceful Tomorrow. His speeches challenge U.S. imperialism and foreign policy and put forth a political and historical analysis of why America was attacked in the first place. He also criticizes President Bush and calls for an end to the War on Iraq. "The U.S., under Bush's regime, should not be the arbiter of democracy because you cannot export a democracy you do not have internally," he says. He points out that President Bush was not democratically elected and calls for his impeachment.

A February 2003 interview on the O'Reilly Factor thrust Glick even further into the spotlight. O'Reilly wanted Glick to discuss why he signed Not in Our Name's Statement of Conscience after his father was killed in the World Trade Center attacks. Glick responded with an anti-aggression, anti-war, anti-imperialist assessment of the climate leading to September 11th, his opposition to a war on Iraq, and called into question the oppression of Palestine. The segment quickly devolved into an O'Reilly temper fit -- he got so angry he began shouting at Glick, "Shut up. Shut up." Glick calmly responded, "Oh, please don't tell me to shut up," but O'Reilly ordered Glick's mike cut and ended the interview after accusing Glick of sullying his father's memory. Transcripts of the interview have been widely circulated around the Internet and posted on many a left-leaning web site.

Had O'Reilly let Glick finish, he might have been able to clarify that his anti-war and anti-imperialist stance in no way absolves the guilt of the terrorists who attacked New York and Washington, D.C. Calling al-Qaeda a "goon squad" of an extreme right faction he likens to fascists, he says, "I think the political violence we witnessed on 9-11 is ridiculous and counterproductive. It's horrendous. All it does is alienate people and make them afraid. And, make them afraid of revolution, thinking that revolution equals some sort of random, massive violence."

"[O'Reilly] is a stranger, millionaire, media bigot who tried to slander me vis-à-vis my family," says Glick. He took special offense to O'Reilly's comments about Glick's father. "I'm very cautious not to say what his opinion of 9-11 would be because I don't think it's fair because he's not here." But, Glick asserts that he knows his father also "thought Bush's presidency was illegitimate" and that he was proud of his son's activism.

Glick's mother and sister support him too, but shun the media spotlight. Though Glick's mom has no interest in using her experience for activism, because she feels that her grief is private, he says of her, "She thinks it's useful that I've been able to use my experience to help me with my activism and it's very much in the spirit of what my father would do." After the O'Reilly debacle, Glick's sister wrote a letter to O'Reilly blasting his treatment of Glick.

Glick's activism started in high school, though his reading of revolutionary literature began in grade school. Years before joining the "Free Mumia" struggle in the early 90s, Glick says he was stealing books from his dad's bookshelf in the early 80s. "Dick Gregory's Autobiography," "The Autobiography of Malcolm X," and "Soul on Ice," by Eldridge Cleaver, topped Glick's reading list at age nine. Glick says that early on he developed "the consciousness of a young man of color." Adopted as a baby by a white Jewish family, Glick's origins have been pinned down to North Africa and the Mediterranean. "I'm an X," he says, though terming himself "African-identified."

As a younger man, Barry Glick was also a Marxist struggling against that era's war, Vietnam. Glick says his dad had "great admiration" for SDS, the Black Panthers and the women's movement. "It's not surprising," Glick says, "if you listened to the eulogies [at my father's memorial], where I come from." He then shares a sour irony, "That Sunday after the memorial, in my house, were the people my father always wanted to meet."

"The Left have been the ones who have really, seriously, demonstrated their empathy for my family," says Glick. He adds, "It was like this opening up of a world I had kept separate from my family."

Friends and comrades like Amiri Baraka, long-time activist and New Jersey Poet Laureate, and Mario Africa of the MOVE organization, were among the ranks offering their condolences. That meant a lot to Glick because he felt it was sincere and in no way an attempt to co-opt his family's grief to advance a political agenda.

Glick says specifically of Africa's support, "If anyone could understand what it would be like to lose a family member in that kind of act of violence [it would be] the MOVE family, which had been shot and bombed, literally fire-bombed, by the city of Philadelphia. Before I talked to Mario about it, that was one of the first things I thought about. Wow. I never really knew how they felt. Although those are different circumstances, it's still the same kind of machinations of the state apparatus that is responsible for our mutilated loved ones."

Originally acquainted to Glick through rallies and events around the free Mumia Abu-Jamal movement and the "MOVE 9" -- nine members of the MOVE organization held in prison since 1978 -- Glick and Africa established a friendship as they continued to work together politically. Africa talks of his support for Glick after his father died as reaction based in friendship. Because Glick "has always been there" for the MOVE family, he says, he "really wanted to be there for [Glick] the way he has been, and still is, for us"

One of Glick's regrets from the time period just after September 11th, however, is that he did not speak at his father's memorial (not a funeral because the family still does not have a body to bury). Fearing that the eulogies would become a platform for political ideology he says he "made this proviso that there'd be no politics," though he stood with his sister as she spoke of their father. It was a moment that made him feel "somewhat unprincipled" because he believes that there should be a dialogue of viewpoints whether they are the similar or different. Typically, Glick says, "I'll talk to anybody", regardless if they share the same political outlook. "I feel like you have to talk outside your circle."

As a student at Rutgers/New Brunswick, Glick solidified his commitment toward social justice. In tandem with his campus and local organizing efforts, Glick began a bi-weekly column in the Rutgers Daily Targum, called "Unlearning Privilege." He says his column became the "underground propaganda wing" for Rutger's multi-national Left.

Friend and writer, Dax Devlon Ross, says that Glick was "always into advocacy" at Rutgers. "He would take it upon himself to write an editorial that everybody would [end up] quoting." Ross says that Glick often had his finger on the pulse of what others were thinking and would articulate it in his column. "People could read it and count on it being there." Ross adds, "I hope people understand that [Glick's] values are genuine. Whatever he says is well thought out."

Africa concurs. "Even before the misfortune of losing a family member, [Glick] was a powerful activist in his own right." Africa goes on to say that he is in awe of Glick's ability to be "consistent and strong in his opposition" to war. At a benefit concert for Africa's Central Committee for Conscientious Objectors (C.C.C.O.), in Berkeley, California, Glick was one of several activists invited to speak at a concert that featured Chuck D and the Fine Arts Militia, Ani DiFranco, Ozamatli and Michael Franti and Spearhead. "That was great because it was at the Berkeley State Theatre where Hendrix used to play," Glick says. "And there were 4,000 people there."

Speaking to that many people has become par for the course for Glick. In March 2003 he earned raucous applause and ovations as a panel speaker at WBAI's "Echo's of Dr. King's 'Beyond Vietnam': An Evening of Resistance to the War on Iraq" at Riverside Church. The audience was at full capacity, with an overflow in the lobby listening by radio. He was recently interviewed about his views on cable TV station New York One, and traveled to address a coalition of student and community organizers at the University of Illinois at Urbana.

Glick has also signed onto activist and organizer Rosa Clemente's tour, Speak Truth to Power: Hip-hop against the War. "It's the hip-hop generation's opposition to the Bush plan," he explains. The tour features Fred Hampton, Jr., Dr. Ron Daneiels, and Khalil Almustafa among others. In May, Glick is slated to speak at an anti-war conference in Santa Cruz, California.

Aside from traveling the lecture circuit, staying politically active and writing articles for progressive publications interested in his work, Glick continues to work on his doctoral dissertation on themes of black radicalism and dramatic tragedy around the Haitian Revolution and Toussaint L'Ouverture, and Huey P. Newton and the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense. Though he does not think the revolutionary vanguard will rise out of academia, Glick does think it is important for there to be intellectualism on the Left. He lists Newton, George Jackson, Franz Fanon, Mao and Lenin as thinkers and writers who were scholars and revolutionaries able to reach the masses. To start a cultural revolution Glicks says, "I think we need revolutionaries everywhere."

Africa has faith that, academic or not, Glick will be "somebody who's going to be lighting the way for people for a long time." He adds, "He's going to make a lot of noise and do a lot of good for a long time."

Lorraine G. Bay, Crew - a 37-year United veteran and senior flight attendant of Flight 93, Lorraine Bay, 58, from East Windsor, N.J. had chosen Flight 93 over another flight because it was nonstop. Lorraine Bay left behind her husband, Erich, and no children.

Todd Beamer - An account manager for Oracle Corporation, this 32-year old father of two was traveling to Redwood Shores, California for a business meeting, and planned to return home on a red-eye flight that night. Todd Beamer left behind his wife, Lisa, and two young sons - David and Drew. Lisa was pregnant with their third child - daughter Morgan - on September 11, 2001. Famous for his "Let's roll" statement made to the passengers as they prepared to try and overpower the hijackers of Flight 93.

Alan Beaven - Alan, a environmental lawyer from Oakland, California, was headed to San Francisco to try a case before leaving on a planned year-long sabbatical to do volunteer work for the SYDA Foundation in Bombay, India. Originally born in New Zealand, Alan Beaven left behind his wife, Kimi; daughter, Sonali; and two sons from a previous marriage, Chris and John.

Mark Bingham - The world-traveling, fun-loving owner of The Bingham Group in San Francisco, California, was heading home after a weekend in New York City on Flight 93. The 31-year-old Mark Bingham left behind his mother, Alice Hoglan, father, Jerry Bingham, and step-mother, Karen Bingham.

Deora Bodley - A junior at Santa Clara University, in San Diego, California, 20-year-old Doera Bodley was returning home from a visit with friends in New Jersey and Connecticut. Deora left behind her mother, Deborah Borza; father, Derrill Bodley; and a half-sister, Murial.

Sandra W. Bradshaw, Crew - A flight attendant on United Airlines Flight 93, Sandy Bradshaw, 38, lived in Greensboro, North Carolina, with her husband, Phil; daughter, Alexandria; son, Nathan; and stepdaughter, Shenan.

Marion Britton - Headed to San Francisco for a computer operations conference with fellow Flight 93 passenger, Waleska Martinez, 53-year-old Marion Britton was an assistant regional director for the U.S. Census Bureau in New York City. She lived in Brooklyn, N.Y. and left behind a brother, Paul, and half-brother, John.

Thomas E. Burnett, Jr. - The 38-year-old family man from San Ramon, California was senior vice president and COO of medical devices company, Thoratec Corporation. Tom Burnett was a passenger on Flight 93, heading home from a business meeting in New Jersey and a weekend in Minnesota and Wisconsin. He left behind his wife, Deena, and three young daughters, Madison, Halley, and Anna Clare.

William Cashman - This fun-loving Ironworker was headed out west, for hiking in Yosemite National Park with his old friend, Patrick Driscoll. William Cashman, age 60, left behind his wife, Margaret, in West New York, N.J.

Georgine Rose Corrigan - A hard-working mother and grandmother, Georgine Corrigan made her living buying and selling antiques, vintage jewelry and clothing. She was returning home to Honolulu, Hawaii, where she lived with her daughter, Laura Brough, after an antiques buying trip to New Jersey.

Patricia Cushing - Mother of five, Patricia Cushing, was traveling on vacation with sister-in-law Jane Folger on Flight 93. Patricia Cushing, 69, was a retired service representative for New Jersey Bell and lived in Bayonne, N.J. She left behind sons Thomas, John and David, and daughters Alicia and Pegeen.

Jason Dahl, Captain - The Captain of United Airlines Flight 93, 43-year-old Jason Dahl was piloting that flight in order to have time off to take his wife to London to celebrate their wedding anniversary on September 14. Jason Dahl is survived by his wife, Sandy, and son, Matthew.

Joseph DeLuca - A trip to California wine county with his new girlfriend, Lindo Gronlund, put Joseph DeLuca on Flight 93 on September 11, 2001. The 52-year-old computer program designer for Pfizer Consumer Healthcare lived in Succasunna, N.J. and left behind parents Joseph Sr. and Felicia, and his sister, Carol Hughes.

Patrick Driscoll - He retired in 1992 from his job as director of software development for regional Bell telephone companies, and started traveling. Flight 93 was the start of a trip with friend and fellow Flight 93 passenger William Cashman to hike in Yosemite National Park, Patrick "Joe" Driscoll, 70, was from Point Pleasant Beach, N.J., and is survived by his wife, Maureen; sons Stephen, Patrick, and Christopher and daughter, Pamela.

Edward Porter Felt - A computer engineer for BEA Systems from Matawan, N.J., Edward Felt was taking Flight 93 to get to a business meeting in San Francisco. The 41-year-old left behind his wife, Sandy, and daughters, Adrienne and Kathryn.

Jane C. Folger - Jane Folger, 73, a retired bank officer from Bayonne, New Jersey, was traveling to San Francisco on vacation with her sister-in-law, Patricia Cushing. She is survived by her children: sons, Robert, Thomas and Michael, and daughter, Kathleen Kulik.

Colleen L. Fraser - A passionate lobbyist for the disabled, Colleen L. Fraser, was born with an inherited bone disorder that kept her height at 4 feet, 6 inches, and made it a little harder for her to get around. The 51-year-old from Elizabeth, N.J., served as executive director for Progressive Center for Independent Living, and vice chairwoman of the New Jersey Developmental Disabilities Council and was on her way to a grant-writing seminar in Reno, Nevada. Colleen Fraser left behind a sister, Christine Fraser; brother, Bruce James Fraser; two stepsisters and six stepbrothers.

Andrew Garcia - He was 62, but most people wouldn't have believed it if they met him. Andrew Garcia kept active, both physically and mentally, and loved to play tricks on people. The President and founder of Cinco Group, Inc. was returning home from a business meeting on September 11, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughters, Kelly Garcia and Audrey Olive; and son, Andrew.

Wanda A. Green, Crew - The proud mother of son, Joe Benjamin, and daughter, Jennifer, United Airlines flight attendant also worked as a real-estate agent, and had plans to open her own real-estate office. Wanda Green, 49, was from Linden, N.J.

Donald F. Greene - Executive vice president and chief financial officer of Safe Flight Instrument Corporation, Donald Green, 52, lived in Greenwich, Connecticut. He was on Flight 93 on a trip to join four of his brothers for a hiking trip before attending an aviation industry convention. Donald Green is survived by wife, Claudette; son, Charlie; and daughter, Jody.

Linda Gronlund - It was to be a short business trip, and then a birthday tour through California wine country with boyfriend, Joe DeLuca. But for 47-year-old Linda Gronlund from Greenwood Lake, N.Y. it didn't quite work out that way. The manager of environmental compliance for BMW North America, Linda Gronlund left behind her mother, Doris; father, Gunnar; and sister, Elsa Strong.

Richard Guadagno - A longtime employee of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Rich Guadagno was employed as manager of the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Service. He was headed home to Eureka, California, after celebrating his grandmother's 100th birthday. Rich Guadagno left behind his parents, Beatrice and Jerry, and sister, Lori.

LeRoy Homer, Jr., First Officer - A graduate of the Air Force Academy and veteran of the Persion Gulf War, First Officer LeRoy Homer, Jr., 36, was in his sixth year with United Airlines. He left behind his wife, Melodie, and a young daughter, Laurel.

Toshiya Kuge - Following a summer vacation in America and Canada, student Toshiya Kuge was headed back for his second year of college in Japan when he boarded Flight 93. The 20-year-old from Toyonaka City, Osaka Prefecture, Japan, was a sophomore at Waseda University in Tokyo. He is survived by his parents, Yachiyo and Hajime.

CeeCee Lyles, Crew - Former police officer and United Airlines flight attendent CeeCee Lyles was a 33-year-old wife and mother from Fort Myers, Florida. She left behind husband, Lorne and sons, Jerome Smith, Jevon Castrillo, Justin Lyles and Jordan Lyles.

Hilda Marcin - Born Hildegarde Zill in Schwedelbach, Germany, Flight 93 passenger Hilda Marcin was a retired teacher's aide and bookkeeper from Mount Olive, N.J. She was traveling on Flight 93 to California to live with her younger daughter, Carole O'Hare. She is also survived by her other daughter, Elizabeth Kemmerer.

Waleska Martinez - She was traveling with co-worker Marion Britton to a computer operations conference in San Francisco when Flight 93 went down in Shanksville, PA, on September 11, 2001. The 37-year-old Puerto Rican from Jersey City, N.J. worked as a supervisory computer specialist for the New York regional office of the U.S. Census Bureau. Waleska Martinez is survived by parents, Juan and Irma Martinez; brothers Juan Jr. and Reinaldo; and sister, Lourdes Lebron.

Nicole Miller - A 21-year-old senior at West Valley College in San Jose, California, Nicole Miller was returning home after a vacation in New York and New Jersey with her boyfriend, Ryan Brown. She leaves behind her mother, Cathy Stefani; stepfather, Wayne Stefani; father, David Miller; stepmother, Catherine Miller; sister, Tiffney Miller; half-sister, Danielle Miller; half-brothers, Wayne Stefani Jr. and David Miller, Jr.

Donald Peterson - Half of the only married couple on Flight 93, Don Peterson, 66, was a retired president of Continental Electric Co. He worked with his wife, Jean, as a church and community volunteer in their town of Spring Lake, N.J. The couple was on their way to a family reunion at Yosemite National Park. Don Peterson left behind his sons, David, Hamilton and Royster Peterson, and stepdaughters.

Jean Hoadley Peterson - Wife of Don Peterson (above), Jean Peterson also devoted herself as a church and community volunteer. She was a retired nurse and nursing teacher, and this was her second marriage. Jean Peterson is survived by her daughters, Jennifer Grace and Catherine Price, and stepsons.

Mark Rothenberg - Called Mickey by his family and friends, Mark Rothenberg was on his way to Taiwan for business for his company, MDR Global Resources. The 52-year-old from Scotch Plains, N.J. is survived by his wife, Meredith, and daughters, Sara and Rachel.

Christine Snyder - Native Hawaiian Christine Snyder, 32, worked as a certified arborist for The Outdoor Circle, a nonprofit environmental group. She was returning home to her husband, Tom, in Kailua, Hawaii, after attending the American Forestry Conference in Washington, D.C. and a visit to New York City.

John Talignani - Retired bartender John Talignani, from Staten Island, N.Y., was headed to California on Flight 93 to claim the body of his stepson, Alan Zykofsky, who had just died in a car crash. John Talignani is survived by his stepsons, Mitchell Zykosfky and Glenn Zykosfky.

Honor Elizabeth Wainio - A 27-year-old regional manager for Discovery Channel stores from Watchung, N.J., Honor Wainio was on her way to a company-wide business meeting on September 11, 2001. She left behind her father, Ben Wainio; mother, Mary White; stepfather, Jay White; brother, Tom Wainio; and sister, Sarah Wainio.

Deborah Ann Jacobs Welsh, Crew - Debbie Welsh, the 49-year-old United Airlines flight attendant who served as purser on Flight 93, was a native of New York City, N.Y. She is survived by her husband, Patrick.

Kristin Gould White - This freelance medical writer from New York City was on her way to visit friends in California. Kristin White, 65, is survived by her daughter, Allison Vadhan.

Another 14 victims of Flight 93 identified

Investigators have positively identified the remains of another 14 persons aboard United Airlines Flight 93 and Somerset County Coroner Wallace Miller said the investigation could conclude more quickly than expected.

At the same time, the high winds that buffeted the area over the last few days have dislodged additional airplane parts -- seat cushions, wiring, carpet fragments and pieces of metal -- from trees near the crash site.

"It's all aircraft parts, no human remains," Miller said. "We've collected them in 10 recycling bin-sized containers and eventually we'll turn them all over to United."

Yesterday's confirmation of victims' identities by the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology DNA lab in Rockville, Md., means that 34 of the 44 people who were aboard the jetliner crashed Sept. 11. have been identified.

Flight 93 bound for San Francisco from Newark, N.J., had two pilots, five flight attendants and 37 passengers aboard when it crashed in Stonycreek. Four were hijackers who seized control of the Boeing 757 as it approached Cleveland; they were possibly diverting the plane to Washington, D.C., when a battle for control of the jetliner took place with the other passengers.

"We're progressing at a very steady pace in identifying the victims," Miller said. "Originally we thought it might take four to six months, but things are moving faster than we thought."

Miller said the lab is continuing to test DNA material to verify the deaths of the last six crash victims.

He said DNA tests won't be able to identify the four hijackers on board.

"To make a DNA identification we need something from the victims or their family members -- personal effects, or blood samples -- to match," Miller said. "We don't have that kind of information about the terrorists."

Identification of the victims through DNA testing allows the coroner to issue death certificates and return the fragmented remains to the families.

Miller said he will identify as many of the remains as he can. Remains that can't be identified will be interred at a grave in Somerset County.

"We already have issued presumptive death certificates so families could begin to take care of the affairs of those persons we haven't identified," Miller said. "Now we can say for sure on 34 of the victims and that gives the families, some of whom have held memorial services, more of a sense of closure."

Instant Messages To Israel Warned Of WTC Attack

NEW YORK -- OFFICIALS at instant-messaging firm Odigo confirmed today that two employees received text messages warning of an attack on the World Trade Center two hours before terrorists crashed planes into the New York landmarks. Citing a pending investigation by law enforcement, the company declined to reveal the exact contents of the message or to identify the sender.

But Alex Diamandis, vice president of sales and marketing, confirmed that workers in Odigo's research and development and international sales office in Israel received a warning from another Odigo user approximately two hours prior to the first attack. Diamandis said the sender of the instant message was not personally known to the Odigo employees. Even though the company usually protects the privacy of users, the employees recorded the Internet protocol address of the message's sender to facilitate his or her identification.

Soon after the terrorist attacks on New York, the Odigo employees notified their management, who contacted Israeli security services. In turn, the FBI was informed of the instant message warning. FBI officials were not immediately available for comment today. The Odigo service includes a feature called People Finder that allows users to seek out and contact others based on certain interests or demographics. Diamandis said it was possible that the attack warning was broadcast to other Odigo members, but the company has not received reports of other recipients of the message.

In addition to operating its own messaging service network, Odigo has licensed its technology to over 100 service providers, portals, wireless carriers, and corporations, according to the company. Odigo is online at http://www.odigo.com .

NEW YORK, Sept. 13, 2001 -- The horrible terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center towers will be the most costly man-made catastrophe in U.S. history, with insured losses likely to be in the billions of dollars, according to the Insurance Information Institute.

Property insurance policies generally cover damage from fire, explosion, smoke, or other property or liability loss that occurs, the III explained. Insurance policies do exclude war, but this is generally defined as a declared war between nations. In light of increased global terrorism, some commercial insurance policies may have exclusions for damage caused by terrorist attacks. Aviation policies will also be impacted.

The 1993 World Trade Center bombing caused $510 million in insured losses. The 1995 Oklahoma City bombing resulted in insured losses of $125 million. The Los Angeles riots of 1992 resulted in insured losses of $775 million, previously the most costly insured man-made disaster until today, according to the III.

Any determination of insured losses will have to take into account the destruction of the World Trade Center towers; business and personal property of tenants and their employees; workers' compensation for injured workers; claims for lost business income; and the cost of establishing alternative, temporary operations at off-site locations.

The U.S. government is self-insured, so physical loss to government buildings is not a commercial insurance issue. Insured commercial businesses within the Pentagon, for example, could incur insured losses.

The Insurance Information Institute also announced that its close vicinity to the demolished World Trade Center could affect operations as the tragedy unfolds.

In a message posted on the company Web site on Wednesday, the company announced: "We are deeply relieved to know that the number of confirmed survivors is growing, and we continue to hope and pray that we will find even more of our Aon family safe. [930 - ed] Aon employees at the command center in Glenview, Illinois continue to work around the clock to contact New York-based employees and their families in an effort to account for all of our employees."

The message continued: "While our primary focus will continue to be on our colleagues and their families, we also need to be concerned for the business and personal needs of our clients, many of whom also suffered losses in this terrible tragedy. To that point, we have agreed that unless local authorities direct otherwise, our offices everywhere in the world except New York City will be open for business to assist clients and policyholders during this very difficult period. We are finalizing plans as to where our World Trade Center operations will relocate and we will provide this information to employees and clients as soon as possible."

Josh was selected in 1977 as a Truman Scholar and graduated in 1979 from the University of Michigan. He studied public policy and economics at the Woodrow Wilson School and spent his summer internship at the Office of Management and Budget in Washington, DC. Post-graduation, he became special assistant to the President of the New York Mercantile Exchange, Richard Leone, MPA'65 and PhD '69. Josh worked for Leone for four years including working on the Walter Mondale presidential campaign in 1984.

He then spent nine years with JP Morgan, ending his tenure as vice president of mergers and acquisitions. Next, he joined the development offices of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. In 1996, Josh became a portfolio manager at Grantham, Mayo, van Otterloo & Company in Boston. Josh then joined Fiduciary Trust Company International in June 1998 as a senior vice president. Josh Rosenthal died on September 11, 2001 in the attack on the World Trade Center.

But just as extraordinary was how much he meant to people who knew him casually. Once, when I visited him in New York after graduation, I went to work with him at the Mercantile Exchange. From the moment we left the subway, Josh seemed to know every person we met on the way to his office: the news vendor at the corner stand, the security guard, the receptionist, the person pushing the coffee cart. And I don't mean he new their names: I mean he knew them. With each he took a moment to joke and laugh, to ask about their kids, last night's baseball game, how their sore shoulder was doing. And I could see that five minutes - or even two - with Josh was one of the highlights of their day.
